Each year The Little Farms Garden Club of Potomac spends a chilly morning decorating the Tavern at Great Falls for the holidays. The tradition was established in 1978 and we look forward to it every December. The centerpiece of the decor is a beautiful 40 foot garland that hangs over the entrance to the tavern. The garland starts with a simple pine roping and is then built up by wiring on magnolia, holly and nandina branches until it is thick and heavy.
Meanwhile other club member are busy creating 18 swags from douglas fir, white pine, magnolia and holly for each of the exterior window sills, as well as for the light posts. Still others are making red velvet bows, wrapping posts with evergreens and creating arrangements for the inside of the tavern.
Park Ranger Mark Meyers is our man on the ladder and we hand up the heavy garland for him to install and he hangs swags on the light posts.
